Farmers Market Cheese in NY

July 1, 2011

One of our favorite parts of buying cheese at NY farmers markets is that artisanal cheese makers will cut you a piece of cheese any size you want. Unfortunately, new regulations are making it nearly impossible for artisanal cheese makers to sell their product unless it is pre-packaged. In other words, as a customer we will no longer be able to request odd weights and have them cut right in front of us. Rather, the artisans will have to come to the market with pre-packaged cheese. Some may not think this is a big deal, but for us it is. Part of the beauty in buying cheese at a farmers market it interacting with the artisan, asking them questions, exchanging names, watching them prepare your cheese and asking for suggestions. Pre-packaged food isn’t the end of the world but it certainly takes away some of the purity and charm from it. To read more, visit http://bit.ly/ikQBGh
