West Virginia University is a Research 1 land grant institution with about 30,000 students. The School of Art and Design maintains a limited enrollment of about 80 graphic design majors. Our approach to visual design is broad and embraces service design to help communities grow their social networking and self-determination. We are located in a rural setting that enjoins our connection and conservation of the beautiful rivers and mountains in our midst. We feel that designers must be engaged as citizens of their locale, making their gifts and education count, while being aware of global connectedness and stewardship of people and planet.

In a pragmatic approach to design education, we bring at least one client into every year of the curriculum so that students realize why they design and whom the stakeholders are that design affects. Thus, the research and design process becomes real for all projects. We run a senior course as a full studio serving about 30 clients a year. Service Learning allows students to be embedded as co-designers addressing innovations in organization, delivery systems and data visualization that can appropriately use technology and analogue artifacts to help organizations affect change. We also have fun.
