PLACEABLE is a mobile learning environment that engages student visitors and community members with contemporary art practices and local histories. Our prototype focuses on the Education Program at The Wassaic Project, a multi-disciplinary arts center located in rural Dutchess County, NY that fosters community and offers a supportive environment in which to create, present, and discuss contemporary art. In the first phase, SUNY New Paltz design students developed game concepts and prototypes for a mobile application that encourages visitors, artists and community members to document and share their experiences at the Wassaic Project.

Art and humanities education faces a host of challenges that ask educators to leverage a great range of technological innovation while exploring deeper connections across curriculum. Increasingly limited budgets do not allow for robust, project-based curriculum in practice with community engagement.

Students developed thoughtful proof-of-concepts of gaming and learning environments that connected to the Wassaic's educational programming. Concepts highlighted the relationship between local history and contemporary arts practices through activities that engaged users in rich media production using mobile devices.
