Upacita is a ground up funding model for the arts and non profits. It is a shared ownership of creative businesses by individuals within the arts and cultural community (piloting in Jakarta). Starting with small individual investments (acknowledging volunteer time and artistic skills as a form of investment in addition to money), Upacita aggregates the market power of individuals who by themselves could not achieve financial independence. Included in the platform is the possibility of of micro-loans for new creative businesses. It augments income, while sustaining the community’s programs, financing the arts from the ground up.

The unholy trinity of climate change, peak oil & speculative economics is framing our future options. The Arts should not remain dependent on unsustainable sources of funds and an unjust economic system. Indonesia's creative agents of change need to raise awareness and start addressing their financial independence.

Through Upacita, individuals within the community may invest their money, time and/or skills (based on what each individual can afford) in a collective capital pool, which can in turn support the arts community. Individuals' work & contributions to the collective are then translated into annual profit shares for its members
